Six McMath Wood P.A. lawyers, including Carter C. Stein, Sarah C. Jewell, James Bruce McMath, Neil Chamberlin, Will Bond, and Samuel E. Ledbetter, were recently recognized by The Best Lawyers in America®️ in the 29th edition of the publication. Mr. Bond and Mr. Ledbetter were additionally recognized as “Lawyer of the Year” for their respective handling of Little Rock personal injury and environmental law cases.

First published in 1983, attorneys named in The Best Lawyers in America®️ publication are peer-nominated before being added to a ballot for voting by fellow attorneys. The publication requests that the candidates’ peers rank the nominee from 1 to 5 based on their knowledge of the candidate’s handling of various practical legal scenarios. There’s also a section on the ballot in which respondents can self-report any additional information they deem pertinent to the appropriateness of a prospective attorney nominee’s mention in this publication.

The former owner of Skyline Healthcare, a company that owned or operated over 100 skilled nursing facilities in 11 states, is facing new charges in Arkansas—a total of 10 felony charges. Former owner Joseph Schwartz is being charged by the Arkansas Attorney General’s office with two counts of tax fraud and eight counts of Medicaid fraud. Over the past several years, Skyline Healthcare facilities across the country have been investigated for numerous allegations, including fraud, resident neglect, unpaid staff wages, bounced checks, short staffing, wrongful death, missing payroll documentation, inadequate COVID-19 prevention measures, and a host of other issues, causing many of the facilities to close their doors.

Many suffer from head injuries that cloud their judgement, or they’re suffering from immense pain from broken bones or other damages. Even when they try to use their insurance to ensure their bills are covered, the hospital might choose to try to make the patient fully responsible for paying for the treatment they’re receiving.

Portopiccolo Group, an investment firm based in New Jersey, buys nursing homes and tries to make them more profitable. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the investment firm bought over 20 nursing homes, even though these facilities hold the most vulnerable populations when it comes to the coronavirus.
